How to Put Xbox 360 Controller Back Together
Introduction: Disassembly, Cleaning, and Reassembly of an Xbox 360 Controller.
This step-by-step guide will instruct you on disassembling, cleaning, and reassembling of your Xbox 360 Controller. Read each step in its entirety very carefully prior to execution to avoid any issues during the process.
Step 1: Purchase a Torx T8 Security Screwdriver
You'll need to purchase a Torx T8 Security Screwdriver. The screws in the Xbox 360 controller have a pin in the center that prevents a standard torx bit from being used. As you can see, they're available for pretty cheap on Amazon, but feel free to purchase one from wherever you choose.
Step 2: Purchase Your Cleaning Supplies.
You'll also want to purchase some isopropyl alcohol and some cotton swabs. Alcohol tends to be the best cleaning solution to use, as it dries quickly and isn't corrosive.
Step 3: Locate the Six Screws Visible on the Back of the Controller.
There should be three screws on each side. Two on each of the handles of the controller, and one on either side near the top corners of the battery compartment.
Step 4: Locate the Seventh and Final Screw. ***WARNING***
***WARNING: THIS STEP WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY***
The last screw is located underneath the serial number sticker. You can either peel back or puncture the sticker to remove it.
Step 5: Set Aside the Screws.
Place the screws somewhere they won't be lost. If you have a magnet or bowl in which to place them, do so. Remember, there should be seven once all are out of the controller.
Step 6: Clean All Necessary Components.
All rubber components can be removed, and all buttons can be removed if necessary. each button is specifically shaped so as to only fit into its respective hole. Soak the end of your cotton swab with alcohol and scrub any necessary component gently but firmly. Dry with a fresh cotton swab if necessary.
Step 7: Begin Reassembly.
Reassemble each component of the controller. Make sure the rubber components are aligned correctly. Reference the picture for how they should look once in place. If you have issues reassembling the controller, the analog sticks (thumb sticks) may have come loose. Adjust them if necessary.
Step 8: Reattach the Back of the Controller.
Make sure all other components of the controller are aligned and fitted properly before this step. Once you've done so, insert the triggers first for easier assembly.
Step 9: Reattach the Back of the Controller. (Part 2)
This part is VERY important. Make sure as you replace the bottom of the back panel of the controller, the battery terminals are inserted into the slots on the inside of the compartment. Refer to the image to see what it should look like when assembled correctly.
Step 10: Reinsert the Screws. ***WARNING***
***WARNING*** Before you reinsert the screws, I would recommend inserting batteries to make sure the controller turns on properly. You don't want to replace all of the screws only to find you now have a nonfunctional controller. Once you have done so, replace the screws in any order you choose.
Step 11: Enjoy Your Freshly Cleaned Controller!
